Marshland High School

English

Welcome to our English Department!

English is that magical and practical subject which enables students to effectively communicate with the world around them. Students acquire, apply and develop their knowledge, building on what they already know. With enquiring minds, students passionately express themselves with confidence through speaking, reading and writing. Our English curriculum encourages students to participate fully as citizens in society.

English teachers at Marshland High School are passionate about teaching English. We value the role language and literature plays in the world and we endeavour to make English accessible and enjoyable for our students.  Our students learn resilience, compassion and empathy because in addition to reading, writing and oracy, that is what we teach.  Our students learn from mistakes and we strive for excellence.  We promote discussion and debate to break boundaries and stereotypes. Our purpose is to ensure that when students leave Marshland High School, they are competent readers, writers and thinkers who communicate articulately.

Key Stage 3

In Key Stage 3 we have designed a conceptual curriculum to develop pupils' sense of English as an academic discipline by linking its abstract frames and metaphors to concrete examples within challenging texts. They explore rich and varied texts across Y7, Y8 and Y9.

Key Stage 4

Year 10 & 11 students follow the Edexcel course in English Language and AQA course in English Literature. All GCSEs nationally are now linear course, meaning students complete all exams at the end of the two years.

Students complete two examinations for English Language and two examinations for English Literature.
