Marshland High School Catering Team

Catering Manager - Mrs Lilley

The Catering Team at Marshland High School is led by the Catering Manager, Mrs Lilley who has been at the school for many years.  Mrs Lilley and her team work side-by-side to produce a variety of meals using seasonal produce, whilst ensuring that a balanced and healthy menu is provided to suit all tastes and dietary requirements.

Healthy Eating and the School Canteen

Healthy Eating

The school canteen, along with the West Norfolk Academies Trust are constantly developing new and improved health-conscious menus.

The canteen offers a wide choice of products which are available throughout the day, which include a complete range of healthy snacks and refreshing beverages.

As a school, we are always seeking to improve facilities and menus to enhance the students' dining experience.

Food Hygiene

The Catering Manager and the team are proud that the kitchen holds the five-star food hygiene rating issued by the local authority.  Five is top of the scale, which means the hygiene standards are very good and fully comply with the law.

Canteen Times and Menu

Opening Times

The canteen is open twice a day, at break and lunchtime.

Menus

Full details of the meals, snacks and drinks available on a daily basis can be found by clicking here.

These menus are reviewed at regular intervals and could be subject to change.

Fizzy drinks and energy drinks are not permitted in school.  Students found to be drinking energy drinks will have them confiscated.

Water fountains are available in school.

Allergen Policies and Dietary Requirements

Food Allergy

In order to ensure the health and welfare of your child, we need to know if they have an allergy to any food, or if they are not allowed to eat any particular foods. If your child has any allergies, intolerances or cannot eat any foods due to religious or cultural beliefs, please make sure you have told us in the Medical Information Section on your MCAS app.

Policies

When selecting produce and drawing up menus, WNAT adheres to various policies regarding allergens and dietary requirements, ensuring all food produced is well-balanced and nutritional.

Recycling

The school canteen, along with the school's Site Manager and the WNAT Operations Team are constantly looking to improve recycling.

At present:

  • All cardboard and paper waste is recycled.
  • The school has stopped the use of polystyrene, take-away boxes and cups and introduced cardboard containers.
  • WNAT has introduced recyclable straws and stopped the use of plastic straws.
  • The school is always looking into ways to reduce plastic waste.

Free School Meals

For the latest guidance and eligibility, visit Norfolk's Free School Meals website

Free School Meals (FSM) is changing from September 2026.  Please see below, as this may affect your eligibility.

1. More families are becoming eligible

All households on Universal Credit are becoming eligible, with two tiers of entitlement:

  • Targeted: if you earn under £7,400 a year, your children will be entitled to FSM and extra support for their school
  • Expanded: if you earn above £7,400, your children will be entitled to FSM only

All households who receive other qualifying benefits will also receive Targeted FSM.  A full list of qualifying benefits is available on Norfolk County Council’s free school meals website.  You will only need to apply once per child.

2. Protected entitlements are ending

Children who were previously assessed as eligible for FSM had their eligibility protected.  This meant they could not lose their FSM, even if the household was no longer eligible.  These protections are ending in September 2026, meaning some children may lose their existing eligibility.  Norfolk County Council will contact you to confirm your eligibility before the end of the summer holiday.

3. Annual Eligibility rechecks

Norfolk County Council will recheck the eligibility of all children on an annual basis.  Parents already in receipt of benefits related FSM do not need to reapply, as your eligibility will be rechecked and confirmation of this will be sent to you before the end of the summer holiday.

4. No Recourse to Public Funds

Due to these changes, all households that qualify as No Recourse to Public Funds (NRPF) and receive FSM must reapply, or you will lose your entitlement.

Questions

If you have any questions following receipt of your updated eligibility, please contact Norfolk County Council at: fsm@norfolk.gov.uk

The easiest and quickest way to apply for FSM is online via Norfolk Education Online (NEO) – www.norfolk.gov.uk/freeschoolmeals and click ‘Apply for free school meals’.

Does my child's entitlement to free school meals continue if my child transfers to another school?

The entitlement to free school meals continues for children transferring between one school and another within the same Local Authority, subject to parents/carers continuing to receive one of the qualifying benefits.

Parents of children transferring to schools outside of Norfolk should apply to the County Council where the school is situated.
