Philosophy
The philosophy of the department is to support the pupils to gain the necessary skills that they can become independent learners before they leave the school.
The Department The department comprises the SENCo and 19 Teaching Assistants. Some TA’s support pupils by withdrawing from a few lessons for Literacy support, Behaviour and Anger Management and Social Skills training. Pupils with more complex needs are supported by TA’s on a 1:1 basis in classrooms. Most TA’s have strong links to a curriculum area and support pupils in the lessons of that subject. Where there are classes with a number of pupils with complex needs, often one TA remains with the class and is joined by a second TA with a subject specialism. Pupils are mainly supported in classes but exam dispensations are arranged as necessary so that the pupil’s needs do not limit their achievements in tests and exams.

Behaviour and Anger Management and Social Skills Training
Behaviour and anger management and social skills training takes place by withdrawal to the Independent Learning Centre, where the Manager supported by other TA’s support pupils to overcome behaviours that are proving to be a barrier to their learning.
Literacy support
Literacy support takes the form of withdrawal to the SEN base (Support Centre), where a range of methods are used to boost literacy levels. These include; Toe-by-Toe, Successmaker, Phonographixs, and the Catch Up literacy programme.
![]() Key Stage 4Some pupils in Key Stage 4 follow a reduced GCSE curriculum and are given an extra 3 lessons per week of individual support to boost their basic skills and to manage GCSE coursework. A small group of pupils in Key Stage 4 follow the ASDAN Bronze Award www.asdan.org.uk and Duke of Edinburgh (Bronze) www.dofe.org in year 10, hopefully progressing to the Certificate of Personal Effectiveness (COPE) and Duke of Edinburgh (Silver) in year 11.
