We believe that learning languages is an enjoyable and stimulating experience. It offers exciting new insights into a wider world and in turn, it invites us to think about our own cultures. Learning a language involves the practical skills of listening, speaking, reading and writing. Pupils at Marshland gain the confidence to communicate effectively in a foreign language and they develop an awareness of the structure of language itself.Years 7, 8 and 9
From the first lesson pupils are largely taught through the medium of the target language. We also encourage students to communicate using the target language so that they can experience the language being used in real life situations and become more confident in speaking spontaneously. Following the requirements of the National Curriculum pupils develop the skills of reading, writing, speaking and listening within different contexts. They are encouraged to use their knowledge of English to understand new structures in the foreign language which they are learning. Year 10 and 11Currently modern languages are optional in Key stage 4. We encourage pupils who are in the top sets to opt for a foreign language. Some pupils choose to study French and German. The emphasis at GCSE is on communication in the foreign language. Students also improve their ability to work independently. Topics are worked through thematically and build on foundations created in Key stage 3. Whatever career students decide on in the future the communication skills they have gained from studying a foreign language to GCSE level will always be to their advantage as they can make the most of the opportunities in today’s global jobs market. ResourcesWe use a variety of up-to-date, easily accessible resources to reinforce out teaching. These include: • 4 fully trained and qualified knowledgeable, friendly and enthusiastic teachers.
• 3 interactive white boards • Brand new textbooks • CD’s and DVD’s • Authentic materials, posters and magazines • Internet websites • We have a French and German Reading programme in place in the library.
How Learning is OrganisedAll pupils in Key stage 3 study French and pupils who are in the top sets study German as a second language from year 8. At present there are two top sets in year 8 and 9. In Key stage 3 pupils are taught in sets according to aptitude. Each pupil has an assessment booklet and progress is being monitored by assessing vocabulary tests, listening, reading, writing and speaking skills. National curriculum levels are given on a regular basis. Current Syllabuses
The two skills Reading and Listening are part of the final examination in year 11. The two skills Speaking and Writing consist of two controlled assessments each.
Trips
All pupils in Key stage 3 have the opportunity to stay at a Château in France during the summer term. We aim to visit a Christmas Market in France or Germany which is useful for Key Stage 4 pupils in preparation for their speaking exam.
