Humanities

The Humanities department consists of Critical Thinking, Geography, History, Culture and Beliefs and Sociology. We have a purpose built block with interactive whiteboards throughout, and a small computer facility.

As a department we expect the highest standards of behaviour and achievement from all students, and our policies reflect this. If homework, organisation or behaviour becomes a concern, parents are quickly contacted to resolve the situation. We have a close-knit team of staff who work hard to raise achievement.

Standards of teaching in the department are good with outstanding features.

Key Stage 3

At KS3 (Years 7 to 9) students are set according to ability. Lessons are taught by specialists in discrete lessons of Geography (twice a fortnight), History (twice a fortnight) and Culture and Beliefs (once a fortnight).

Key Stage 4

At KS4 students can opt to study Geography, History, Religious Studies or Sociology at GSCE level, and Culture and Beliefs at 'AS' level for our highest attaining students. Students are taught in mixed ability groups. We try to keep class sizes to a maximum of 25, but this is not always possible due to the popularity of Humanities subjects as a GSCE option.
